St. Mark's Pastors

The Rev. Mr. Frederick G.H. Hasskarl, 84, of 2 East Honey Locust Dr., Lewisburg, died Feb. 9, 2003 at the Evangelical Hospital, Lewisburg. He was born Sept. 28, 1918 in Bridgeton, NJ, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Frederick Hasskarl. He was educated in the public schools of Wilmington, Del,, received his BA degree from Muhlenberg College in 1939 and his master of divinity in 1942 from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He was ordained May 20, 1942, in Philadelphia.

His pastorates were in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Annville, Pa. from 1942-45 during which time he served as secretary of the Lancaster Conference. In 1945 he went to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Burholme (Philadelphia) during which time he led the congregation in the construction of a new education building. He served as secretary and president of the Philadelphia Conference from 1948 to 1954, Conference Christian High Education Chairman, and delegate to the ULCA Conventions in 1952 and 1954.

From 1955 to 1981 he served as pastor of St. Mark Lutheran Church during which time he led the congregation to the construction of the new St. Mark’s Church which was dedicated in 1960. He served on the Central PA Synod Board of Social Volunteer Ministry 1955-66 and serving as its president from 1960-66. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Tressler Lutheran Services, member of the Synodical Commission on the ministry and Synod Necrolopist from 1982-86.

He retired in 1981 and in 1986 served as the Interim Pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church, South Williamsport, and as a supply pastor in numerous congregations from 1981 to 1995.

He severed as a member of the Board of Directors of Red Cross, Visiting Nurse Association; Tuberculosis Society; Community Cancer Society; Citizens Advisory Committee for Lysock View; president of Williamsport Kiwanis Club; Captain of Clergy Division of Lycoming United Fund, 1963- 68; Listening Ear Counselor; Advisory Board of Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing; Advisory Board of Williamsport Hospital Chaplaincy Program; Friends of the Library Board; consultant for Religious Affairs at the Williamsport Home and was a volunteer at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village and the Union County Public Library and Susquehanna Valley Visitors Bureau for several years.

On May 23, 1942, he married Helen A. Mohn, Allentown, PA. Along with his wife he is survived by two sons, Mark of Danbury, CT, Philip of Bradford, MA, and four grandchildren; Andrew, William, Katherine and Jenna and 1 great grandson, Christian. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Lewisburg.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Market Street, Williamsport, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Rev. Kenneth Elkin. Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery. Should friends so desire, gifts in his memory may be sent to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 142 Market St., Williamsport or the Christ’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 100 S. 3rd St., Lewisburg.
