What is this, stacked so neatly? The Great Wall of China? No!!!! The dikes in Holland? Not really!!! You are looking at stacks of boxes of new shirts, donated for the relief of the Liberian people - now sitting in a hallway at St. Mark's.
When Pastor Elkin learned that a local shirt company was going out of business, he contacted the firm in late July 2007. The company was more than willing to donate excess inventory to the relief of the Liberian people.
What happens next? In November 2007, the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the ELCA will send yet one more container of supplies for the Lutheran Church of Liberia, and its schools and health care ministries. This will be the synod’s 23rd shipping container sent since 1991.
The shirts will have a dual use in the container - as packing material, to protect more fragile items, and to clothe those in need in Liberia, when the container arrives at its destination.
What else? Some of the shirts will be used to outfit a mission-trip group from Christ Episcopal Church, and others will go to the Needlework Guild for use in their Christmas boxes for local disadvantaged kids.
How can you help? The cost of shipping the container to Liberia is more than $10,000. You can donate to this cause, by using the special purposes offering envelope on Sunday. Also you can volunteer to assist in the loading of the container in November. Contact Pastor Elkin for more information.
