Dr. Morris Smith, the United Churches of Lycoming County Shepherd of the Streets, spoke to about 20 members of the congregation during a 9:00 A.M. forum on July 22, 2007. He reviewed the many programs provided by his ministry to the poor, and described the dire need of some of those who he serves.
The Shepherd of the Streets ministry was started in the early 1990's by Sister Henry of St. Anthony's Center and Lutheran Minister, Rev. Dr. Alton Motter, who saw a need for services to the poor that exceeded that provided by St. Anthony's. The number of services provided have expanded over the years, and the number of people served waxes and wanes with changes in the economy.
The costliest program is prescription assistance. The most difficult is securing proper documentation for those who need to get a job or other government assistance.
Bedding and work clothes are given to those in need. Grants have been secured to pay gas and electric bills, for hearing aides and eye glasses and dental care. The grants are limited and when the funds are exhausted, folks in need are often unable to find help. The ministry is always in need of financial help and also donations of bedding and toiletry items.
The ministry receives no government money and is funded entirely by funds from churches, individuals, businesses and foundations.
Dr. Smith has found that "quite a few" of the people he serves are faithful people who regularly attend church. They give away many bibles and encourage religion in serving the people of the community.
