St. Mark's was pleased to host The Rev. Bishop A. Donald Main on Sunday, July 8, 2007, in his last official visit before his retirement in August. Bishop Main preached the sermon at both services and spoke to about 25 members of the congregation during a 9:00 A.M. forum.
During the forum session, Bishop Main spoke extensively about his recent trip to Liberia. He noted that our synod has been paired with Liberia for many years and has provided a multitude of services and significant missionary involvement during that time. The services include hospital staffing and supplies, particularly in two "up-country" hospitals.
He noted that conditions there are still rather poor. There is no running water and no electricity. Malaria is a problem. Whole villages were wiped out in the recent civil war. Industry and employment are almost non-existent.
Bishop Main thanked the members of St. Mark's for their continued support of the mission in Liberia. However, he noted that the needs of the Liberians can never be met by our charity - because they are so many. So, we must do what we can in what ever limited areas we can offer support. He noted the recent gift of used hospital beds from the Lutheran nursing homes.
The members of St. Mark's wish Bishop Main a long and healthy retirement.
