On Friday, April 1, Community volunteers made 40,000 packaged meals during Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church's meal packaging event. Over the course of two one-hour segments, about 270 people gathered in the basement of the church to fill bags with food that will be distributed to food pantries and homeless shelters in Lycoming County.
A group of 15 adults and children volunteered from St. Mark's Lutheran Church. St. Mark's also provided the desserts for this event to help feed the volunteers.
The Messiah set up 10 assembly lines in which the volunteers worked together to fill the bags with noodles and soy protein, seal them then place them in a box, which can then be cooked in five cups of water and made ready to eat.
St. Mark's members also donated funds to help fund the meals. $1 buys four meals, so every dollar raised goes to make four bags of macaroni.
These meal packing events have been going on across the county with the help of the Rev. Dr. Kerry Aucker, pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran in Jersey Shore. He said that he heard about other churches participating and thought it was a good opportunity to help the community.
