On Thursday, July 27, heavy rain and high winds hit Williamsport. The combination gook a toll on the aluminum steeple that has crowned St. Mark's since it was constructed more than 50 years ago.
Early reports suggest that welds in the support framework within the cross broke due to the wind stress.
No services were affected by the damage. However, for several days the front door was blocked due to fears of codes officials that the steeple could fall.
Such fears were left behind when the steeple was able to be successfully removed with the use of a crane. Allison Crane service used a gondola suspended from a crane to hold several men who disassembled and removed the steeple.
The pieces will be repaired in the church courtyard and then reinstalled.
The removal process went smoothly.
