Six confirmation students and 7 adults left on an adventure on Saturday, March 4, 2012. The trip, a traditional part of the confirmation studies, was led by Pastor Elkin.
After an early start the group first stopped at Augustus Lutheran Church in Trappe, Pa. The church dates from 1743 and is preserved for its relationship to the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in the United States, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg. The old church is still being used, although the congregation regularly worships in the "new" 1852 building.
The excursion next visited the Hopewell Furnace. This national historic site is the location of iron plant dating from the 1700's. It is a well preserved showcase of an early American industrial facility.
Finally, the group visited the Ephrata Cloister. This was one of America's earliest religious communities, founded in 1732 by German settlers. The kids appreciated the hard life of the Brothers and Sisters, from the hard beds, to the many hours of worship and prayer, to the meager meals.
There were no meager meals at the next stop, Old Country Buffet in Lancaster. The group was well nourished for the trip back to Williamsport.
What a great trip!
