Hot dogs and popcorn - trinkets and tattoos for the kids - soda and bottled water - chips and Cheetos - candy of all kinds.
St. Mark's again hosted a hospitality table on July 4, as a part of the city-wide celebration of Independence Day. Everyone who passed the Church was offered free food and drink by one of many volunteers stationed along the street.
And boy did those folks eat and drink. Thirty-four pounds of popcorn was popped; 250 mini-bags of chips and Cheetos were given away; more than 300 hot dogs were eaten; and lots of candy was consumed. The thirsty drank 9 cases of soda, 15 cases of water, and 2 tubs each of lemonade and iced tea.
For the kids, temporary tattoos were applied and lots of crosses, bracelets and other trinkets were given away.
The crowd seemed to appreciate the hospitality. We recognized many faces from other years. Many were astounded that there was no cost. The donation jars did yield $295.00 plus some change for St. Anthony's Center.
St. Mark's organist Jungwha Kim played a concert before the fireworks. More than 100 folks participated in the patriotic program in the nave with many more listening on the front lawn thanks to Jim Buckman broadcasting live.
The fireworks were spectacular! A lightening storm in the clouds punctuated the bursts of color and light, for a most unusual display.
Many thanks to Becky Miller Pryor, who again spent countless hours organizing the event. Also, thanks to the many folks who volunteered to set-up, serve and then clean up at the end of a great day, despite first the heat and then the lightening.
For all involved, the day was a satisfying experience that says something about our commitment to God and country.
