July 4 Hospitality

A St. Mark's Tradition Continues

"Popcorn, hot dogs, drinks . . . free," the man in the flag shirt hawks. And the people, who were intent on finding a seat for the fireworks, flocked in.

Popcorn makersThis July 4, hundreds of folks were served hot dogs, popcorn and much more for over 3 hours before the annual Williamsport fireworks display. Becky Pryer, who led the effort commented, "for me this was by far the best event I have chaired. So many of our young families lent a hand and many church members came down and stayed."

Some statistics:

  • 40 plus pounds of popcorn popped.
  • 5 gallons of both lemonade and ice tea.
  • 250 bottles of water
  • 5 cases of soda in 12 oz. cansHawking popcorn
  • 400 bags of Fun Yums.
  • 250 mini bags of candy.
  • 8 - 10 bags of loose candy in dishes to take.
  • 100 each of patriotic necklaces, plastic crosses, rubber "Got Faith" wristbands, colored bead necklaces
  • 50 plus each of friendship bracelets, gold crucifix necklaces, red, white & blue medals.
  • 150 kiddie tattoos.
  • 250 plus hot dogs.

Selecting a treatPatriotic concertGood will and just being a good neighbor is the point of this annual effort. Most folks appreciated the hospitality. Some donated to St. Anthony's Center, in the collection boxes that were left on the tables, and we collected $371.67.

At 7:30pm, 115 were in the nave to enjoy a concert of patriotic music given by St. Mark's organist Jungwha Kim. Waiting for fireworksMany others on the front lawn were able to hear the concert thanks to Jim Buckman's sound set-up.

After dark, many guests sat on the front lawn to see the spectacular fireworks. What a great night!

Thanks to the many who popped, cooked, hawked, served, set-up and tore down.
